TRUSTED BY THESE WELL KNOWN BRANDS AND HUNDREDS MORE.
St Mark’s is a very large, cheerful looking stock brick church designed by the splendidly-named Chester Cheston from 1864-66. We know little of the architect beyond that he was the son of the agent of a wealthy local parishioner who was involved in commissioning the church. His only other known work is a few houses and a pub! The church interior is dark yet graceful, all held up by the technology of cast iron. The original gasoliers were simply turned upside down when electricity came.. All in all, this is a good example of how we can learn to appreciate the numerous Victorian churches of London which have survived wartime bombing and demolition through neglect or new development. One of the clock faces is probably unique in this country, housing a barometer. |
